How does Modavigil work?

Modavigil increases wakefulness and daytime alertness in people who experience excessive sleepiness during the day, either due to narcolepsy, or due to a syndrome called obstructive sleep apnoea. Modavigil can be prescribed to improve wakefulness and alertness in people who suffer moderate to severe sleep disorders as a result of chronic shift work. However, Modavigil should not be used as a replacement for sleep and you should talk to your doctor about ways to try and maintain good sleep patterns.

Modavigil's mode of action appears to be different to other CNS stimulants, such as the amphetamine group of medicines that are also sometimes used to promote wakefulness. This difference is believed to reduce modafinil's potential for abuse and dependence, though there may still be a risk of this if Modavigil is used long-term.

The way in which Modavigil improves wakefulness is not yet fully understood, but it is believed to have an effect on specific parts of the brain responsible for keeping us awake.

The possibility of harmful effects during pregnancy has not been ruled out. If you become pregnant or plan to become pregnant, tell your doctor immediately. Modavigil is recommended during pregnancy only if the need for therapy outweighs the potential risk.

It is not known whether Modavigil appears in breast milk. Tell your pharmacist if you are breastfeeding an infant. Nursing mothers should use Modavigil with caution and only when clearly needed.

What is the most important information I should know about Modavigil?

Use caution when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities. Modavigil may affect your judgment, thinking, or motor skills. If you experience any of these effects, avoid hazardous activities. It is best to avoid alcohol while taking Modavigil. Alcohol and provigil may have altered effects if taken together.

Modavigil may be habit forming. You should discuss the abuse and dependence potential of provigil with your doctor. Do not stop taking modalert without first talking to your doctor. Your pharmacist may want to gradually lower the dose of the medication before stopping treatment.

Modavigil may decrease the effects of hormonal methods of birth control including birth control pills and depot and implantable formulations (e.g., Norplant, Depo-Provera). Use a second, nonhormonal form of birth control while taking provigil, and for one month after stopping provigil, if prevention of pregnancy is desired.
